Original Star Trek star Walter Koenig has died at the age of 90. He passed away from natural causes in his California home.

The Chicago-born star, who played Eastern Europeans at several points in his career after growing up with parents who were Jewish Russian immigrants, achieved prominence as young lieutenant Pavel Chekov, winning a big fan following even though his character had little room to develop. He appeared in multiple spin-offs and films after the original series of Gene Roddenberry's space opera finished, and also found fame with a much more complex and devious character in Babylon 5. His other big screen ventures were less successful, but he found a passion for short film late in life and never lost his enthusiasm for acting work.

As well as appearing in front of the camera, he wrote several scripts, books and comics.

He is survived by his daughter, the actor Danielle Koenig.
