On The Waterfront actress Eva Marie Saint has died at the age of 102.

A family spokesman said Saint, who also starred in Alfred Hitchock's North By Northwest, had died of natural causes at her home in Los Angeles.

She won the Best Supporting Oscar for her role as Edie Doyle alongside Marlon Brando in On The Waterfront.

Starting out in radio and television, Saint went on to have a career that spanned six decades. Other notable roles included in Norman Jewison’s comedy The Russians Are Coming the Russians Are Coming and alongside George Seagal in Loving. Later films included Wim Wenders' Don’t Come Knocking and Because Of Winn-Dixie in 2005, and Superman Returns in 2006. On TV, she made a number of cameo appearances down the years and had a recurring role in Moonlighting as Cybill Shepherd's mother.

The SAG-AFTRA actors union was among those paying tribute to her, saying: "An advocate for organised labour, she leaves an enduring example for generations of union members."
