Catalan filmmaker Júlia de Paz Solvas took home the Grand Prix at Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival last night with The Good Daughter, her exploration of the relationship between a father and daughter marred by the man's violence towards the girl's mother. The film also proved popular with the film community in Tallinn, winning the Audience Award, while star Kiara Arancibia also took home the prize for Best Actress.
The Official Competition award for Best Director went to Turkish filmmaker Ali Vatansever's LifeLike, about a terminally ill man who spends his time in virtual reality. It also won Best Score for Erdem Helvacıo Ju.
Aladdin Detlefsen and Kanji Tsuda we're jointly named Best Actor for Frog In The Water, directed by Thomas Stuber, while the Best Cinematography gong went to Yutaka Yamazaki for Yukihiro Morigaki's The Imaginary Dog And The Lying Cat. Norwegian film No Comment, directed by Peter Naess, won Best Script, while Richard Hawkins' UK production Think Of England - about a porn propaganda film being made during the Second World War - was celebrated for Best Production Design.
In the First Feature competition, Danish director Christian Bonke's Hercules Falling won best film, with Samuel Abrahams' UK mockumentary Lady winning Best Director. There were two special jury prizes in the section, for Simple Girl and Sunday Ninth.
Best Film in the Critics' Picks section went to Lithuanian director Jurgis Matulevičius' China Sea, while his fellow countryman Vytautas Katkus picked up Best Film in the Baltic Competition for The Visitor.
In the Doc@POFF international section, Finnish director Karin Pennanen won for Days Of Wonder, while Lithuania triumphed again in the Doc@POFF Baltic Competition with Aistė Žegulytė taking the top prize for Holy Destructors.
In the Rebels With A Cause sidebar, Best Film went to The Baronesses" directed byBen Yadir and Mokhtaria Badaoui.
