The Artist leads silent charge for Golden Globes

Black and white film gets six nominations

by Amber Wilkinson

Silent film The Artist is leading the charge for the Golden Globes, with six nominations.

Michel Hazanavicius's tale of a silent movie star struggling to cope with the advent of the talkies, picked up nods for direction, screenplay, original score, best comedy or musical along with nominations for its French stars Jean Dujardin and Berenice Bejo.

Dujardin said: "The Golden Globe nomination for 'The Artist' has left me speechless."

The 1960s story of racial tension and emancipation, The Help, and George Clooney's Hawaiian drama The Descendants weren't far behind with five nominations apiece. Both films will vie for best drama, while Clooney was nominated for best dramatic actor and The Help earned acting nods for Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer and Jessica Chastain.

Also in the running for best drama are Martin Scorsese's Paris-set adventure Hugo, Clooney's political thriller The Ides of March, Brad Pitt's baseball flick Moneyball and Steven Spielberg's World War I drama War Horse. Meanwhile, cancer comedy 50/50, Parisian romance Midnight In Paris, risque wedding romp Bridesmaids and Marilyn Monroe biopic My Week With Marilyn stack up against The Artist for best musical or comedy.

British and Irish talent has not been overlooked, with Michael Fassbender up for best drama actor for his role as a man struggling with sex addiction in Shame, and Brendan Gleeson nominated for the comedy acting gong for his cop role in The Guard. Tilda Swinton, meanwhile, faces formidable competition from Meryl Streep (The Iron Lady), Glenn Close (Albert Nobbs), Viola Davis (The Help) and Rooney Mara (The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo) in the dramatic actress category. While Kate Winslet - nominated for Roman Polanski's Carnage - also faces stiff competition in the supporting comedy/musical actress category from Jodie Foster (also Carnage), Charlize Theron (Young Adult), Kristen Wiig (Bridesmaids) and Michelle Williams (My Week With Marilyn).

Aardman Animations' Arthur Christmas is also in the running in the animation category, where he will square up against Puss In Boots, Rango, Cars 2 and The Adventures Of Tin-Tin.

Five-time Academy Award and Globe nominee Morgan Freeman - who won the supporting-actor Oscar for Million Dollar Baby and a best-actor Globe for Driving Miss Daisy - will receive the group's Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement at the ceremony on January 15.
