Abdellah Taïa (Cabo Negro), Neo Sora (Happyend) and Salvatore Mereu (Bentu) are among the names joining Locarno Film Festival's Pardi di Domani selection of short and medium length films this year.

The festival describes this strand as "a territory for expressive experimentation and innovative forms of cinematic poetry”. This year’s edition features work from 25 countries and includes 40 world premieres across three competitions.

The films will compete for awards including the Pardino d’Oro, the Pardino d’Argento, Best Direction Award, Medien Patent Verwaltung AG Award, and Best Swiss Newcomer Award.

Other familiar names in the selection include City Of Wind director Lkhagvadulam Purev-Ochir, Marta Popivoda (Landscapes Of Resistance) and Katharina Huber (A Good Place).

Festival artistic director Giona A Nazzaro said: “The program of the Pardi di Domani has not only gained an ever-growing following over the years, but has also established itself as one of the unmissable events for lovers of short cinema. A breeding ground for experimentation and creative joy that continues to reap successes and launch authors ready to make a fruitful mark on contemporary cinema.”

Eddie Bertozzi, Head of Pardi di Domani Selection Committee described the line-up as: “A selection of bold films that plunge us into the heart of today’s most pressing tensions. Featuring both established voices and striking new discoveries, this program sparks a dialogue between diverse cinematic experiences and offers a radical invitation to rethink identity, bodies, and conflict from fresh and provocative perspectives.”

This year's festival will run from August 6 to 16
