Film at Lincoln Center has announced that Luca Guadagnino’s Queer, an adaptation of the novel by William S Burroughs, starring Daniel Craig, Drew Starkey, Jason Schwartzman, Lesley Manville, Michael Borremans, Andra Ursuta, and David Lowery will be the Spotlight Gala of the 62nd New York Film Festival. RaMell Ross’s Nickel Boys, Steve McQueen’s Blitz, and Pedro Almodóvar’s The Room Next Door are the Opening, Closing and Centerpiece Gala selections.

Nicola Maccanico, head of Cinecittà, had told me last year about the filming of Queer at the studio in Rome: “Almost all of the movie is shot in Cinecittà. Luca has some road in front of him, but so far he’s happy and for sure I can tell you, it’s unbelievable to see this level of talent.” When he was in town for Open Roads: New Italian Cinema earlier this year, Maccanico confirmed how amazing Guadagnino’s new film was and how he can’t wait for the world to see it.

“I am so privileged and elated to present a movie of mine for the third time at NYFF, Queer in particular,” said Guadagnino. “It is a very personal movie about the inescapable quest for being recognized in the gaze of another through the lens of the great William Burroughs.”

“Luca Guadagnino is one of contemporary cinema’s most versatile filmmakers, and one of its biggest risk-takers,” said Dennis Lim, Artistic Director, New York Film Festival. “Queer is his most fearless, inventive, and surprising film, one that brings its subcultural world to brilliant life and creates the role of a lifetime for a tremendous Daniel Craig.”

The Main Slate selection committee is chaired by New York Film Festival Artistic Director Dennis Lim, and includes Florence Almozini, Justin Chang, K Austin Collins, and Rachel Rosen.

The 62nd New York Film Festival runs from Friday, September 27 through Monday, October 14.
