Following yesterday's discovery of human remains on Mount Baldy, it has been confirmed that they are those of the actor Julian Sands, who went missing in January.

"The identification process...has been completed and was positively identified as 65-year-old Julian Sands of North Hollywood. The manner of death is still under investigation, pending further test results," said the San Bernardino Sheriff's Department in a statement. "We would like to extend our gratitude to all the volunteers that worked tirelessly to locate Mr. Sands."

The Room With A View star was an enthusiastic hiker and mountain climber who had scaled many famous peaks around the world. He was a regular visitor to Mount Baldy, where his car was found shortly after his disappearance. He is thought to have been following the Baldy Bowl Trail when the area was hit by a succession of severe winter storms. The same weather impeded efforts to search for him, though the increased search activity did result in another lost hiker being found alive.

As an actor, he appeared in some of the most memorable films of the era, with a starring role in cult him Warlock and impressive supporting turns in Naked Lunch, Leaving Las Vegas, The Painted Bird and The Killing Fields, amongst others. He loved attending genre film festivals and was a much loved member of the horror community.

Sands is survived by his wife Evgenia Citkowitz, their two children and his son from a previous marriage.
