BAFTA results for 2010

The Hurt Locker blasts apart competition.

Colin Firth on red carpet before winning BAFTA for A Single Man

The Hurt Locker was the big winner at this year’s BAFTAs, scooping six awards including best film, director and original screenplay.

Kathryn Bigelow’s Iraq war drama left ex-hubby James Cameron’s Avatar trailing, with the 3D adventure picking up just two gongs for special visual effects and production design, despite being nominated in eight categories.

Colin Firth picked up the leading actor award for his powerful performance in A Single Man, and made an amusing speech saying that he was about to turn down the role when a fridge repair man persuaded him otherwise. “I don't know what's best for me so I would like to thank the fridge guy,” he joked.

Kristen Stewart, looking frozen!

Carey Mulligan was named best leading actress for her role in An Education, despite losing out to Twilight’s Kristen Stewart for the Orange rising star award. However An Education lost all of the other categories for which it was nominated, including Outstanding British film, which went to Fish Tank.

Mo’Nique bagged the supporting actress gong for her part in Precious, though she was not there in person to collect it, while Christoph Waltz waltzed off with the supporting actor award for Inglourious Basterds. Speaking at an exclusive after-show event, he hailed the film’s director Quentin Tarantino as “Precise, focused, supportive, sensitive, considerate, quiet – everything we wouldn’t expect.”

The immaculately dressed Vera Farmiga

If there was a best-dressed prize for the night, it would have to go to Up In The Air’s Vera Farmiga, who looked stunning in a white floor-length Grecian-style gown, though she faced stiff competition from the always-elegant Kate Winslet and a rather dashing Tom Ford. Least-stylish would be harder to call, though Mickey Rourke’s scruffy ponytail would certainly make him a contender.

The biggest cheer of the night was reserved for man-of-the-moment R-Patz – surely a possible nominee for next year’s Rising Star award? Meanwhile, the swiftest-walk-up-the-red-carpet honours should go to Prince William, whose security team whisked him past EFF quicker than you could blink, though he did find time to greet a few fans on route. He later presented the BAFTA fellowship to an emotional Vanessa Redgrave, who sweetly bowed before him before taking to the microphone.

James Cameron with wife Suzy Amis

Overall, Avatar’s low haul aside, it was a night of relatively few shocks. Will this pave the way for next month’s Oscars, or are there some big surprises in store?
