The speedboat chase scene in the James Bond movie The World is Not Enough has been votedas the top London movie moment in a poll by London Underground, carried out as part of its Unlocking London campaign.

Almost one in five out of the 1,000 people questioned in the poll to mark the start of The Times 48th London Film Festival next week voted for the famous scene with Pierce Brosnan speeding along the Thames in a high-tech speedboat.

Renée Zellweger being chased through Bermondsey by co-star Colin Firth in hit chick-flick Bridget Jones’s Diary took second place with 15 per cent of the vote and the climax of The Thirty Nine Steps in front of Big Ben took the third spot.

London Underground staff are regularly quizzed about fictional film and TV destinations - such as which line Walford East tube station is on and where the famous Notting Hill blue door is, so the company decided to ask the nation to pick its favourite fictional spots.

Platform 9 3/4, from the Harry Potter movies was the nation’s favourite fictional London destination, with one in three people nominating it. Only Fools and Horses' Nelson Mandela House came second with 18 per cent of the vote and Hugh Grant’s bookshop from Notting Hill took third position with 9.5 per cent.

Home to regular glitzy film premieres and the opening and closing night galas of the The Times 48th London Film Festival, it’s not surprising that Leicester Square emerged as the most film-friendly Underground station, with just under one in four people questioned thinking that they were most likely to spot a film star there.

London Underground's Elizabeth Norris said: "London Film Festival is one of the highlights of the year for movie lovers in the capital. We hope that the results from our poll will encourage people to make the most of their city and explore all the world famous movie icons the capital has on offer."
