Nominations for the 2026 Oscars were announced today, and there was a lot of excitement as Ryan Coogler's Sinners achieved a record breaking 16 nominations. One Battle after Another secured 13 nominations, which would be impressive in an ordinary year, while Sentimental Value, Frankenstein and Marty Supreme each got nine.

If you've been following the rest of this year's awards, there won't be many surprises in the line-up, but the Bugonia team will be thrilled to secure a Best Picture nomination. Sentimental Value did really well in the acting categories, with four nominations, while Sinners got three and was also nominated in the brand new Best Casting category.

"This nomination is especially meaningful because it recognises the ensemble as a whole, built through careful collaboration, trust, and openness to both established actors and new voices," said Gabriel Domingues, nominated for casting The Secret Agent. "My work...was guided by a singular theme: memory. Each character we cast, no matter how small, had to be rooted in authenticity and the specific reality of Brazil in 1977."

Sirât also made a historic achievement. "We are thankful to be the first women-led sound team nominated in this category," said Laia Casanovas, Amanda Villavieja and Yasmina Praderas. "The film required taking risks on both a technical and creative level in order to create a raw, impactful, and atmospheric soundscape in service of the story, and we are delighted to see that these efforts and decisions are recognised by our fellow peers from the Academy."

A cheer went up from the audience when the last of the films in competition for Best International Feature Film was announced: The Voice Of Hind Rajab. "Among these beautiful films from around the world, I'm deeply honoured that Hind's voice is there. Not as a symbol. As history," said director Kaouther Ben Hania. "This nomination belongs first to Hind. To her voice. To what should never have happened and yet did. It belongs to everyone who believed that cinema can still be a space for truth, care, and responsibility...Thank you to the Academy for listening."

The Oscar ceremony will take place in Los Angeles on 15 March, with Conan O'Brien as host.
