At the top of the league table in the César nominations, announced today (28 January), is American Richard Linklater’s Nouvelle Vague, which chronicles the making of Jean-Luc Godard’s Breathless and the creative movement that gave birth to the New Wave. It has ten nominations including Best Film, Director, Original Screenplay, Cinematography, and Male Newcomer for Godard-lookalike Guillaume Marbeck, as well as Editing, Sound, Original Score and Costume Design.

It will be competing with Dominik Moll’s riveting procedural drama Case 137 / Dossier 137; Stéphane Demoustier’s tale of an obsessive architect clashing with French bureaucracy, The Great Arch/L’Inconnu De La Grande Arche, and Carine Tardieu’s moving, humanistic drama about love and family, The Ties That Bind Us/L’Attachement all with eight nominations each. François Ozon’s The Stranger/L’Etranger which performed strongly in the recent Lumière awards bestowed by the foreign press working in France, scored only four nominations including Best Actor for Benjamin Voisin (also winner in the Lumières).

Hafsia Herzi’s queer coming-of-age story The Little Sister/La Petite Dernière accumulated seven nominations, while Thierry Kilfa’s The Richest Woman In The World, starring Isabelle Huppert, scooped six nominations. Arco, Ugo Bienvenu’s poetic animated feature produced by Natalie Portman, nabbed four nominations.

The Cannes Palme d’Or winner It Was Just An Accident by Jafar Panahi (a French production but shot in Iran in Persian) received two nominations in Best Film and Best Screenplay categories.

Contenders for Best Actress make it a hotly contested category with Isabelle Huppert’s performance in The Richest Woman In The World vying with Leila Bekhti’s role in Once Upon My Mother, Lumière winner Léa Drucker for Case 137; Valeria Bruni Tedeschi for The Ties That Bind Us and Mélanie Thierry for Mariana’s Room/La Chamber De Mariana.

Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another will compete with Joachim Trier’s Sentimental Value, Olivier Laxe’s Sirât; Kleber Mendonça Filho’s The Secret Agent and Guan Hu’s Black Dog in the Best International Feature section.

Presided over by Call My Agent star Camille Cottin and presented by actor Benjamin Lavernhe, the 51st César ceremony takes place on 26 February at the Olympia music hall in Paris. During the ceremony Jim Carrey will be given an honorary César.
