Conclave and Emilia Pérez battle it out at the BAFTAs

Conclave

With 12 nominations, Vatican-set thriller Conclave has taken the lead in this year’s BAFTA race, but Emilia Pérez is hot on its heels with 11, and The Brutalist has nine. Despite being in large part about a desire to escape British influence, Kneecap has six, which the team behind it finds highly amusing.

The only woman to be nominated in the Best Director category, Coralie Fargeat responded “I am so honoured for The Substance to be nominated for five BAFTA awards alongside the work of some of the most inspiring talent in our global industry! This film is deeply personal and was inspired by my own desire to confront the suffocating societal expectations that are pressuring women's bodies and to break free those constraints that have been corseting women for so long...I am so proud to be part of [this event] and that the film can continue to grow its roots into real change.”

“We’re truly honoured by this nomination,” said Ashionye Ogene, producer of short film nominee Milk. “It’s a dream come true and a testament to the hard work and dedication of our entire team and the impact of honest, authentic storytelling. Milk is a deeply personal story for the director about recovery and relationships, but it’s also one that resonates universally with people from all walks of life. From its inception, we aimed for the film to carry a message of survival.”

As other events continue to change their dates to account for the knock-on effects of the wildfires devastating Los Angeles, it is not yet certain when the BAFTA ceremony will be held, but it is expected to be Tuesday 18 February.
