Gown and out

The lowdown on who dressed to impress at the Globes.

by Chris Docker

Almost as important as the awards themselves, are the outfits the stars wear to collect them. Here's our assessment of who waas dressed to thrill and who deserves a dressing down.

Kate Winslet: strapless white Azzaro gown
Naomi Watts: strapless turquoise gown with metal beadwork
Cameron Diaz: one-shoulder white fitted bodice with a skirt made of tiers of white tulle and a jewelled belt with a black bow.
Jennifer Love Hewitt: gold embroidered Georges Chakra gown with a bow waist.
Cate Blanchett: black, off-the-shoulder gown by Alexander McQueen with lace sleeves, delicate jewelled belt and asymmetrical hem.
Penelope Cruz: scoop-neck Chanel Couture gown with a delicate ruffle around the neck.
Reese Witherspoon: canary yellow strapless cocktail dress by Nina Ricci
Drew Barrymore: blush-coloured gown by John Galliano for Christian Dior.
Angelina Jolie: smoky gray strapless gown by St John (a label she models for).
Helen Mirren: Donna Karan custom-designed dark blue jersey gown with antique silver sequined tulle.
Meryl Streep: blush seersucker chiffon gown by Carolina Herrera.
America Ferrara: draped gown by Brian Reyes in a deep indigo.
Sheryl Crow:, above, strapless taffeta gown by Elie Saab.
Jennifer Hudson: navy V-neck Vera Wang gown with short sleeves.
Beyonce: metallic plunging V-neck gown with a keyhole opening on the belly.
Jessica Biel: silver beaded gown with spaghetti straps and open back.
Sienna Miller: white Marchesa cowl-neck and cowl-back gown with gold embroidery in a lattice pattern.
Jennifer Lopez: scarf-style Marchesa, one-shoulder black gown.
Jada Pinkett Smith: pleated tangerine Armani Prive Rachel Weisz: red strapless Bill Blass gown.

Among the disasters were Cameron Diaz - not looking nearly as cool and sophisticated as her recent ex, Justin Timberlake.

One of our favourites was Drew Barrymore, who looked a vision, her long, delicate gown emphasising her a figure that is remarkably slender and poised - in marked contrast to her horrendous appearance last year.

Meryl Streep and Helen Mirren, left must be role models, showing how older women can look simply stunning. Reese Witherspoon got away with one of the brightest colours on parade and carried it very well. While Sienna Miller was every inch the work of art in her Roman-esque embroidered gown and matching latticed hairstyle.

J-Lo's eye-catching gown on the other hand looked as if it was clinging to the front of her body by will-power alone, and the dramatic simplicity of Salma Hayek's white gown and accessories showed that beauty does not have to be ostentatious.
