Sex And Lucia director Julio Medem received the Evolution Vision Award as the 14th edition of the Evolution Mallorca International Film Festival drew to a close yesterday.

Festival director Sandra Lipski said: “With the award to Julio Medem, we want to recognise the career of a filmmaker who has inspired countless directors and touched the hearts of an entire generation. Perhaps the greatest testament to Julio Medem’s legacy is the impact his films have had on audiences. Entire generations have found in his stories the freedom to explore passions and anxieties, to question traditions, and to believe in the power of cinema as a tool for transformation.”

Accepting the accolade, the Basque director said: “This award helps me enormously to keep going. It feels really good - and yes, I intend to continue. What matters is keeping alive the spirit of discovery, of self-discovery. With every film I venture into unknown territory. I don’t want to feel comfortable. I make things difficult for myself, and I like that. It smulates me to the point of being the energy I most enjoy: doing something I’ve never done before, something that’s not easy, and discovering within myself things I didn’t know.”

The festival also announced this year's award winners, with Time We Lost (Und dann Passiert das Leben) by Neele Leana Vollmar being named Best Film. The Best Director award went to Isabel Coixet for Three Goodbyes, while Sturla Brandth Grøvlen received Best Cinematography for The Summer Book.

In the Debut Feature Film category, Satisfaction by Alex Burunova won Best Film, plus took home the Goldfinch Innovation Award. There were special mentions for Evan Matthews (Best Director, Motherland) and Nahuel Varela (Best Cinematography, Where The River Ends). The International Documentary Feature award went to Maxi Campo for 21,000 Palabras.
