Police in Santa Monica today confirmed that they are opening an investigaion into claims that Sylvester Stallone, star of the Rocky and Rambo films, raped a woman in 1990. The actor has categorically denies the claims and, according to TMZ, has asked police to investigate her on charges of filing a false police report.

Stallone has confirmed that he knew the woman and that they spent time together on the set of Rambo III in Israel, but denies that he saw her at all in 1990, when she alleges that he raped her when they met in his Santa Monica office.

The statute of limitations in California is 10 years but police say that in the current climate they will look into the claims anyway. They have noted that gathering evidence is likely to be extremely difficult after so long. The woman did not file a police report at the time of the alleged incident.
