The American Film Institute today revealed its pick of this year's crop, 11 films that "best advance the art of the moving image, enhance the rich cultural heritage of America's art form, inspire audiences and artists alike, and/or make a mark on American society."

"We celebrate these films... as more than just milestones in a year of excellence. They are a part of our American cultural heritage – collectively, a new chapter in the story of the art form and of our nation," said AFI President and CEO Bob Gazzale.

The team behind Interstellar are likely to be particularly pleased as this increases the chance of the film becoming a serious awards container despite the fact that genre films traditionally struggle for recognition.

A private lunch will be held in January to celebrate the winners.
