All about the Oscars

Live updates from the Eye For Film team.

by Jennie Kermode

Welcome to our Oscar liveblog. This was updated live as the results came in.

Earlier we watched the stars on the red carpet. White and beige have dominated this year, with Best Actress nominee Jessica Chastain looking stunning in a stylish nude gown but Jennifer Hudson made a dramatic impression in shimmering dark blue. Quvenzhané Wallis is also bold in blue with a dress by Armani and one of her trademark toy animal bags.

The awards ceremony was presented by Seth MacFarlane and there was an unexpected apperance by William Shatner which outed all the Trekkies in the audience. Charlize Theron and Channing Tatum performed an impressive dance routine, and were followed by Daniel Radcliffe dancing with Joseph Gordon-Levitt, all before the awards themselves began.

Best Picture went to Argo. In a surprise move that perhaps suited the theme of the film, it was presented via a live link from the White House by US first lady Michelle Obama.

Ang Lee has won Best Director for Life Of Pi. In his acceptance speech he thanked the god of movies.

Best Actor went to Daniel Day-Lewis - a record, as it's the third time he's won the award - for his performance in Lincoln.

Jennifer Lawrence won Best Actress for Silver Linings Playbook.

Anne Hathaway has won Best Supporting Actress for Les Misérables.

Best Supporting Actor goes to Christoph Waltz for Django Unchained - so that's twice now that Quentin Tarantino has given him an Oscar-winning role.

Brave has won Best Animated Feature, with Paperman taking Best Animated Short.

Claudio Miranda has won Best Cinematography for Life Of Pi, which has also won in the Best Visual Effects category. The award recipients tried to speak up for the effects house behind the film that is currently threatened with bankruptcy, but were cut off and played out with the Jaws theme. Later in the ceremony, the Pi team returned to pick up the award for Best Original Score. Best Song went to Adele and Paul Epworth for Skyfall.

The first British winner of the night was Jacqueline Durran for her costume design in Anna Karenina.

Best Make-Up and Hairstyling was won by Les Misérables.

Curfew has won Best Live Action Short, while Best Documentary Short has gone to Inocente. Best Documentary Feature was won by Searching For Sugar Man.

The winner of Best Foreign Language Film is Michael Haneke's Amour.

Best Sound Mixing went to Les Misérables, and Best Sound Editing was a tie between Zero Dark Thirty and Skyfall.

Best Editing went to Argo and Best Production Design to Lincoln.

Argo won Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Original Screenplay went to Quentin Tarantino for Django Unchained.
