UK critics go for Argo

Another award for Affleck.

by Jennie Kermode

Ben Affleck's Argo really is on a winning streak, taking its first major award in the UK this week thanks to regional film critics voting in the Richard Attenborough Film Awards. With previous winners including Slumdog Millionaire and The Artist, the win could be a hot tip for Oscar success.

Skyfall, now not only the most successful Bond film but also the biggest ever UK box office hit, picked up two awards, with Sam Mendes taking Best Director and Ben Whishaw being named this year's Rising Star. The award for Bes Screenwriter was shared by Amy Jump, Alice Lowe and Steve Oram for black caravanning comedy Sightseers while Best British Performance went to Robert Pattinson for the latest entry in the Twilight saga.
