Golden boy

Ben Affleck wins big at the Golden Globes with Argo.

by Jennie Kermode and Anne-Katrin Titze

After a tough few years spent languishing on Hollywood's C-list, Ben Affleck is enjoying a triumphant return to form, with his CIA drama Argo scooping both Best Picture and Best Director at last night's Golden Globes. British winners included Daniel Day-Lewis, Maggie Smith and singer Adele, who won Best Original Song for her contribution to James Bond hit Skyfall.

"Thank you for this lovely blunt object that I will forevermore use as a weapon against self-doubt," Best Supporting Actress winner Anne Hathaway said. She also thanked her husband, telling him, "Thank you for the best string of yesterdays I have ever had."

"If I had this on a timeshare basis with my wonderful gifted colleagues, I might just hope to keep it for one day of the year, and I'd be happy with that," said Best Actor winner Day-Lewis
