It was another big night for The Artist, on the eve of the Oscars, at the Independent Spirit Awards. Winning Best Feature, Best Director (Michel Hazanavicius), Best Actor (Jean Dujardin) and Best Cinematography, it set itself up once again as the film to beat this season. "This movie was made to be a tribute to Hollywood and especially to American cinema," said producer Thomas Langman, accepting the Best Feature award.

Best Actress went to Michelle Williams for My Week With Marilyn, Best Supporting Actress was Shailene Woodley (The Descendants) and Best Supporting Actor was Christopher Plummer (Beginners).

Nekisa Cooper, producer of Pariah, was delighted to take home the John Cassavetes award for best feature made for under $500,000. Margin Call won the Best First Feature award and also took the special Robert Altman award for teamwork, while The Interrupters was named Best Documentary.

True to form, A Separation won Best International Film.

The ceremony was hosted by Seth Rogen and took place on the beach in Santa Monica.
