John Travolta received a surprise honorary Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival on Friday night. The Grease star was at the French festival to present his directorial début Propeller One-Way Night Coach, based on his own children’s book.
Receiving the honour unexpectedly ahead of the screening, Travolta, 72, said: "I just can't believe it. This is beyond the Oscar.”
The star, sporting a natty white beret, was visibly moved as festival director Thierry Fremaux gave him the award.
Travolta added: “This is a humbling moment, so thank you Thierry from the bottom of my heart.”
His family film, which is autobiographical, follows eight-year-old Jeff (Clark Shotwell), taking his first flight with his mum (Kelly Eviston-Quinnett).
Returning to the stage after the film, Travolta said it was “just a little taste of my origins and what it was like to be me when I was little. So I hope you enjoyed it. It means the world to me that you’re here”.
