Cannes getting into gear with Fast And The Furious

Festival to host 25th anniversary screening, as Classics also announced

As Cannes continues to rev up for this year's edition, which starts on May 12, it has announced a 25th anniversary midnight screening of The Fast And The Furious on May 13.

Universal's Fast & Furious series has become a worldwide phenomenon, earning more than $7 billion at the worldwide box office, with the 11th film, Fast Forever, set to arrive in cinemas in March 2028 The screening of the film will see Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, producer Neal H. Mortiz, and Meadow Walker, the daughter of the film’s late star Paul Walker all in attendance.

It will screen in the Cannes Classics strand, which is dedicated to showcasing the preservation work carried out by production companies, rights holders, film archives, cinematheques, and national archives around the world. It will present 22 feature films, three short films, and six new documentaries alongside two contemporary works.

Among the notable new inclusions are Mark Cousins' The Story Of Documentary Film (The 70s), which sees the Edinburgh-based filmmaker continue to shine a light on factual film. Also from the UK comes Maverick: The Epic Adventures Of David Lean, which sees St Trinian's co-director Barnaby Thompson offer an in depth study of the filmmaker, narrated by Cate Blanchett.

Among the restorations are Guillermo del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth, which will screen with the director in attendance, to mark its 20th anniversary. Jerzy Skolimowski's Moonlighting, Andrzej Wajda's Man Of Iron and Kaige Chen's Farewell My Concubine also join the line-up.

There will be a family feel to the screening of Dernsie: The Amazing Life Of Bruce Dern, directed by Mike Mendez (Satanic Hispanics), as Dern and his daughter Laura will be in attendance. Roger Corman's Machine Gun Kelly will also screen, with the late director's wife Julie Corman in attendance.
