Initially tied with Emilia Pérez on 12 nominations, Edward Berger's Conclave swept through to BAFTA glory on Sunday night, winning Best Picture, Outstanding British Film, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Editing. Its rival had to be content with the award for Best Film Not In The English Language and a Best Supporting Actress win for Zoe Saldaña, who seemed every bit as startled by the experience as she was at the Golden Globes. Meanwhile The Brutalist, which was widely admired by critics and tipped as a winner early on, equalled the winning total and took the plum prizes of Best Director for Brady Corbet and Best Actor for Adrien Brody.

These wins aside, it was a wide open field. Kieran Culkin continued his run of Best Supporting Actor gongs for A Real Pain and Flow was bumped off the animation top spot by the very British Wallace And Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl, while Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story was a surprise winner in the Documentary category.

There was a protest outside the event by performers calling for better protections from Covid on film sets and in theatres. Colin Farrell and Alyssa Milano were among those who spoke about the devastating impact of long Covid on their health, while organisers Protect the Heart of the Arts cited an Economist piece which out the international death toll from the disease at 27 million.
