The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' Documentary Branch determined the shortlist in a preliminary round of voting on the 145 submitted titles. Documentary Branch members will now select the five nominees from among the 15 titles.
Nine of the 15 films selected were screened in DOC NYC and the filmmakers attended the DOC NYC Pro Short List Day last month.
The nominations for the 89th Academy Awards will be known on January 24, 2017.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences celebration takes place on February 26, 2017.
