Orange launch festival for mobile phone film-makers

by Amber Wilkinson

Orange has announced the launch of the Orange Paper Film Festival, a search to find the UK’s first ever mobile phone filmmaker. The competition is open to all and encourages people to have fun and try filmmaking on their mobile phones.

Competition entrants are invited to recreate scenes from their all-time favourite films using Orange Paper Film Festival toolkits. Each toolkit contains paper sets, props and character cutouts and the kits are available at www.paperfilms.co.uk, from Orange shops, or in newspapers and magazines.

To get the creative juices flowing, www.paperfilms.co.uk also features profiles of the paper characters, offers tips for filmmakers, supplies sets/props and showcases three spoof films.

Mobile phone users with video-enabled phones can shoot video clips and save them to their phone in the same way as photo messages. By VIDEO MESSAGING clips to 078 140 PAPER (078 140 72737), users will receive a confirmation text message from Orange with a unique ID code allowing them access to the innovative editing facility - Orange PaperCut™ - available on www.paperfilms.co.uk.

Orange PaperCut™ is the first UK online video-editing facility for mobile phone users and, once logged in, entrants will be able to edit six video clips together to create a 60 second film. Orange PaperCut™ also offers the ability to add a sound track, which can be chosen from five possible tracks and to add title/credit sequences at the beginning and end of the film. Entrants can then review their finished film before submitting to the competition.

Besides awards for the Best Mobile Film, the Orange Paper Film Festival includes categories for Best Photo Poster via photo messaging and Best Video Film made on a digital video camera, so everyone can take part, including those who don’t have video messaging on their mobile phones.

A panel of directors and actors including award-winning director and creator of the Reason’s to be Orange advertising Dougal Wilson, actor Mackenzie Crook (The Office, Pirates of the Caribbean and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest), Edgar Wright (director of Shaun of the Dead, Spaced), Sharon Maguire (director of Bridget Jones’ Diary), Rankin (photographer and director) and presenter Iain Lee (11 O’Clock Show and RI:SE) will select their favourite films and photo posters and determine a winner for each category. The general public will also have the opportunity to vote for their favourite entries at www.paperfilms.co.uk.

Kristof Fahy, Head of Brand Communications and Advertising at Orange, explains: "The Orange Paper Film Festival is a first in the UK, bringing our latest campaign, Reasons To Be Orange to life in a unique way," explains Kristof Fahy, head of Brand Communications and Advertising at Orange. "Our involvement with the Orange British Academy Film Awards, Orange Wednesdays, and wider support of film on Orange World demonstrates how integral film is to our brand.

The Festival is a great opportunity to engage with our customers, enabling people to experiment with the latest features available on the mobile phone whilst having fun and trying their hand at filmmaking. Orange PaperCut™ is an innovative application for mobile phone users taking technology to another level."

The winning films will be shown at a glittering red carpet ceremony at the Electric Cinema in London on February 1st 2005. Two talented filmmakers and one photo poster designer will walk away with the Orange Palm de Paper and a pair of tickets to a London film premiere. There are also prizes for the films voted for by the public, weekly prizes for the entrants that get the most votes and people voting for entries will be entered into a weekly prize draw for the chance to win vouchers for a DVD of their choice.

The Orange Paper Film Festival will run for two months closing on 9 January 2005. For further information, visit the Orange Paper Film Festival at www.paperfilms.co.uk.
