Oscar-nominated star Tom Wilkinson has died at the age of 75.

The Full Monty actor's family issued a statement, saying: "It is with great sadness that the family of Tom Wilkinson announce that he died suddenly at home on December 30. His wife and family were with him."

Wilkinson, who was nominated for a Best Actor Oscar for In The Bedroom and a Best Supporting Actor gong for Michael Clayton, appeared in a raft of other hit films, including The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind. Although particularly known for character roles, he was a versatile star, who was as adept at comedy as he was in nuanced serious drama.

On the small screen, he won a Golden Globe and an Emmy for his role as American political figure Benjamin Franklin in HBO series John Adams.

He was made an OBE in 2005 for his services to drama.
