Gulf states to celebrate film

New festival opens in Qatar.

by Jennie Kermode

The first ever Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) film festival is to be held this week in the Qatar National Theatre in Doha. With contributions from Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Oman, the United Arab Emirates and the host country, the festival will give an important boost to countries anxious to develop their creative arts potential.

Industry professionals and leading critics from the wider Arab world will be among those judging the competition entries and it is hoped that their presence will give a boost to emerging talent. Qatari Culture Minister Dr Hamad bin Abdulaziz al-Kuwari stressed the importance of film in cultural development. The festival follows a photography exhibition earlier this month aimed at celebrating Gulf history and encouraging artistic collaboration between their neighbouring states.
