Gilmore quits Sundance for Tribeca

Festival Director leaves Institute after 19 years.

It was all change at two of the world's film festivals today, as it was announced that Sundance Festival Director Geoffrey Gilmore had stepped down to take the position of Chief Creative Officer at Tribeca Enterprises.

Gilmore, who has been at the Sundance Institute for the past 19 years will, say Tribeca, "be responsible for Tribeca's global content strategy and lead creative development initiatives and expansion of the brand."

Gilmore - who has been particularly involved with the world film's strand at Sundance in recent years - is one of the most influential names in the independent film industry.

Gilmore said: "I believe that Tribeca Enterprises is well positioned to develop a film organisation that can create a new paradigm for the future.

"The vision of its leadership, its structure and resources, and the track record of its brief history give me great excitement at the opportunity to join their enterprise.

"I've had a wonderful 19 years at Sundance and will always be grateful to Bob Redford. For me this is a big decision, a huge change and an enormous opportunity."

The appointment at Tribeca comes as the festival - which will celebrate its eighth edition this year - is expanding into fresh pastures with a festival in Doha, intended to be a yearly event, to be launched this November.

Arguably, it will also give Sundance an opportunity to bring something fresh to their slate.

Speaking about Gilmore's departure, Sundance founder Robert Redford said: "I have both a personal fondness for Geoff that comes from working together for two decades, as well as a deep respect for his encyclopedic knowledge of and total commitment to independent film.

"Our Festival’s 25th anniversary has been a time of candid reflection. I support completely his decision. The timing is right to move on. We wish Geoff only the best as he embarks on the next phases of his life and career."

Tribeca co-founder Jane Rosenthal added: "As one of the most accomplished creative forces in our industry, Geoff is the ideal person to guide content development for Tribeca Enterprises.

His talent and experience will benefit Tribeca immeasurably, particularly in creating new strategic alliances and opportunities such as our recently announced Tribeca Film Festival Doha. We are delighted that Geoff is moving to New York to join Tribeca at a time of unprecedented change in the world of film and media."

Eye For Film will be at the festival this April, so watch this space for developments.
