Cinematographer Marine Atlan’s début feature as a director, La Gradiva, has claimed the top prize in Cannes’ Critics’ Week from a jury headed by Indian filmmaker Payal Kapadia (All We Imagine As Light).
The film, which has a naturalistic sweep, takes us on a field trip to Naples with a group of French students and their teacher, where one young man also goes in search of his heritage.
The jury also featured Québécois actor Théodore Pellerin, musician Oklou, Ghanaian-British producer Ama Ampadu, and journalist and Bangkok World Film Festival director Donsaron Kovitvanitcha.
The Louis Roederer Foundation Rising Star Award went to Spanish actress-turned-director Aina Clotet for her debut feature Viva, which follows a woman reassessing her life after a cancer diagnosis.
Chinese director Zou Jing’s A Girl Unknown won the Gan Foundation Award for Distribution, while the SACD Award for best screenplay was shared by director Blerta Basholli and co-writer Nicole Borgeat for coming-of-age drama Dua.
