Bruce Dern received a long standing ovation as he attended the world première of Dernsie: The Amazing Life Of Bruce Dern in Cannes last night and another after it had screened.

The 89-year-old star was joined in the red carpet by his daughter Laura Dern, with his second wife, Diane Ladd, and his grandchildren Ellery and Jaya Harper.

He said that coming to Cannes was like "the Olympic Games" for him, arguing that the welcome "means you all give a shit".

The director of the film, Mike Mendez said: "This is my 12th feature film and the first not to première at midnight, so thanks for that."

His documentary offers a career-spamming consideration of Dern's life and work. It also explains "the Dernsie" now used in the industry to describe a line of improvised dialogue or action that adds greatly to a scene and which became Dern's stock in trade.
