Slumdog Millionaire continues its awards march with four Golden Globe nominations.

Danny Boyle's film about an Indian street kid who becomes an unlikely gameshow winner, will contest a strong field in the best film and best director categories against David Fincher's The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button, Ron Howard's Frost/Nixon, Sam Mendes' Revolutionary Road and Stephen Daldry's The Reader. It has also been nominated for best screenplay (Simon Beaufoy) and best original score (A R Rahman).

Films from this side of the Atlantic have also faired well in the best comedy or musical nominations, with Martin McDonagh's feature debut In Bruges and Mike Leigh's Happy-Go-Lucky both in the running.

Following the acting success of British and Irish talent at last year's awards, which saw Julie Christie and Daniel Day-Lewis scoop statuettes, Sally Hawkins (Happy-Go-Lucky), Kristin Scott-Thomas (I've Loved You So Long), Kate Winslet (both Revolutionary Road and The Reader), Rebecca Hall (Vicky Cristina Barcelona)Colin Farrell (In Bruges), Brendan Gleeson (In Bruges) and Ralph Fiennes (The Duchess) are all in the running.

Despite a very high-profile online campaign to get awards ceremonies to recognise Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight (read more about that and join in our discussion here) it failed to make the shortlist, although Heath Ledger has received a posthumous supporting actor nod for his role as The Joker. The winners of the 66th edition of the awards will be announced on January 11, in Los Angeles.
