EIFF director wins New Talent Award

Hannah McGill honoured for contribution to film.

by Amber Wilkinson

Edinburgh Film Festival artistic director Hannah McGill was awarded the New Talent gong at the Women in Film And Television awards on Friday.

The gong is given to an emerging talent who, in the last two years, has made a notable contribution in film, television or digital media.

McGill sad: "I am delighted to receive this award and feel very honoured to be part of such a great event that recognises the hard work of women in our industry."

Other women to be honoured, included Dame Helen Mirren, who picked up a lifetime achievement award.

The 64-year-old said: "When I started as a young actress, you walked on to the set and it was all men. If you were lucky there was one woman who was perhaps the make-up person or the girl who helped you get into your costume. Everybody was male.

"My God, it's changed, but it hasn't gone nearly far enough."

Other winners included Fish Tank actress Kate Jarvis, who won the award for best performance.
