Globetrotting festival celebrates 10th anniversary.

by Amber Wilkinson

Ten years on from a one-off gallery screening in San Francisco, Resfest is back and bigger than ever.

The event prides itself on showcasing new talent from film-makers and creatives who have revolutionised the visual language of cinema, animation and design as well as being the world’s first global event to champion desktop tools that have since empowered a new generation of visual creators.

After the celebrations begin in Chicago in mid October RESFEST | 10 will take in over 41 cities on six continents, opening in Bristol’s Watershed (25-29 October) before heading to London’s National Film Theatre (14-19 November) and finally ending the 2006 UK leg in Dublin’s Irish Film Institute (7-10 December (TBC)). More UK cities in January / February 2007 to be announced in mid November.

Films included in the programme include high-energy Wu Tang Clan documentary Rock The Bells and Pixies concert movie loudQUIETloud".

There will also be a Radiohead retrospective and exciting short film showcases from both at home and abroad.

The short film programme is as follows:

Shorts One: State of the Art - A flagship collection of short form work mixing live action, animation, motion graphics and documentary.

Resfest said in a statement: "This year we begin with newcomers The Blackheart Gang’s sumptuously operatic visual delight The Tale of How.

"As ever, there’s a truly international feel to the collection. Included this year are three exciting world premieres from RESFEST alumni: Johan Kramer’s 0.08, Stefan Nadelman’s Food Fight and the UK’s Richard Fenwick’s The Box. As well as these, there’s plenty more home grown talent featured including Chris Shepherd’s stand-out piece Silence is Golden.

Shorts Two: Out of the Box - Resfest said: "Find out what happens when you put a group of people with different fears in the same room in the surreal adventure Phobias by London based directorial team, Bert and Bertie.

"See wedding plans go awry in Joanna Quinn’s hilarious Family Ties: Dreams and Desires, witness Simon Bogojevic-Narath’s Leviathan, a unique animated take on Thomas Hobbes’s famous social doctrine, before experiencing Guilherme Marconde’s mixed media short Tyger, a fresh and arresting take on William Blake’s beloved poem."

Shorts Three: Fear and Trembling: The Dark Side of Film-making - Resfest said: This late night programme represents some of the darker entries to be submitted for this year’s line up. Shorts include the world premiere of Polish director Marcin Pazera’s Moloch which exemplifies the symbiosis between the factory and man.

"The Sundance Jury Prize winner BugCrush, from America’s Carter Smith, deals with trying to fit in at a suburban high school. The Netherlands’ Rosto whips up a spinning nightmare in Jona Tomberry whilst, in Temerario, London based director Carl Zitelmann guides us through a cowboy’s last few moments of life using vividly stark animation."

Other film showcases include:

By Design - an annual compilation of the latest and best in motion graphics, CGI and innovative animation.

Videos that Rock - The most innovative rock promos of recent times.

Cinema Electronica - A collection of electronic and hip hop music videos, including the likes of Massive Attack, Hifana and Basement Jaxx, celebrating visual ingenuity.
