The Serpent's Skin
Reviewed by: Jennie Kermode
Alice Maio Mackay’s sixth feature and her most accessible film to date, The Serpent’s Skin is enjoying a great festival run, taking in Fantasia, Frightfest and more. It combines sweet-natured romance with supernatural threat, exploring issues around how to handle power responsibly and what to do about people who give free reign to their darker impulses.
At the centre of the action is Anna (Alexandra McVicker), who has recently moved to the city and is sharing a flat with her sister Dakota (Charlotte Chimes) until she finds her feet. This doesn’t take her long. She’s quick to hook up with the most lusted-after guy in the building, Danny (Jordan Dulieu), and to find herself a job in a local record store whose owner, Buzz (Scott Major) is impressed by her ability to handle an attempted robbery. The truth is that Anna doesn’t know how she managed to do so – until she meets Gen (Honeycomb director Avalon Fast), a woman who has previously appeared in her dreams, who tells her that she is a natural born witch. Soon the two are falling head over heels in love, but they will need all their combined powers to deal with the threat heading their way.
