The Sleepy Time Gal
Reviewed by: Trinity
Christopher Munch twists together the lives of two women: Frances (Jacqueline Bisset), a mother diagnosed with cancer and the eponymous Sleepy Time Gal, who is trying to rekindle memories from her youth, and Rebecca (Martha Plimpton), a young lawyer, who wants to find out about her birth parents. The paths of the women cross but never quite meet and that mirrors what happens with this film and my attention.
It's not that I can pin down any particular fault: the acting is good, if understated, the locations and cinematography look gorgeous and the story is worthy enough, but the film seems a dead weight. The lack of pace kills it, although, in a movie about cancer, this might be apt.
Overall, a film that would probably be better off as a book, in which the characters could be explored in more depth.
