Kenny is a weightlifter. At least, he wants to be. Kenny is also a teenager whose mum chastises him for his unrealistic dreams. He works in a restaurant where his boss and co-worker complain that his dedication to the sport is getting in the way of his job. His girlfriend disapproves - perhaps enough to dump him. Life is tough, but Kenny is determined to achieve something on his own terms.

Despite its simple storyline, centered around a competition which Kenny feels he cannot afford to fail, Last Chance, Final Rep is a complex and visually intriguing film. It makes ample use of flashback to tell its story, yet for the most part this avoids being too heavy handed. Its montage scenes are nicely balanced and benefit from some inventive work on the part of director Boyle, who may be one to watch. All of the cast are well chosen, with Kevin Mains sympathetic in a leading role which requires quite a bit of range for a short film, and Leona Logan makes the most of her brief appearance as his sister, the one person still offering him unconditional support.

The story of a misunderstood teenager following his dreams may seem hackneyed to cynical adults, yet it is delivered with such conviction by these talented young filmmakers that it's easy to set those feelings aside and appreciate the film on its own terms. It's unusual to see an early work produced with so much confidence. Ultimately it is this confidence, like Kenny's belief in himself, which ensures that Last Chance, Final Rep delivers.
