Philip Day has an interest in the 'bigger picture' as evidenced by his more recent short One, which explored the universe and our place within it.

Here, some years earlier, he seems more focussed on the human condition as a wheeled, mechanical man rolls through a series of tunnels, seemingly in search of a way out.

As with all Day's work, the animation is extremely well-realised and detailed, although his work on One shows that it continues to improve. The mechanical elements of the film look the real deal and the mask on his 'man' is suitably unsettling.

What Day lacks, however, is a substantial story to hang his work on. It would be interesting to see what sort of creative sparks would fly if he found a writer to collaborate with. I'm looking forward to that day.

Out to own as part of the Final Cut: Take Three DVD short film collection.
