Sarah (Valerie Edmond) returns from New York to spend time with her ex-boyfriend, Sam (Gerry Butler), who is married to Charlotte (Valerie Gogan) and running a restaurant in Berwick-upon-Tweed. Her father, Frank (James Cosmo), sits at home, staring at the wallpaper.

Charlotte is selfish, jealous and bitchy. Sam is weak, charming and dull. Frank is proud, sentimental and miserable. Sarah, of course, is the life and soul, except she's dying.

Even as a teleplay, this would be considered a waste of decent talent. Sarah is too good for this world. What can she do? Mess up Sam's marriage, make her dad cry, leave a message of hope for those who remain?

Suzie Halewood's script starts from nowhere and leads nowhere. Edmond looks so cheery you suspect the plot is a hoax and there's going to be a twist at the end, as Charlotte exits south and Frank picks up his music and Sam takes off that silly pinny and Sarah says, "Just kidding!" Even if she had, Sam would have bored her rigid after a couple of weeks.
