Devil's Island is a bitter sweet tale of Iceland in the fifties. Life is rough in Reykjavik's post-war slum of Camp Thule, where the abandoned US military barracks have been turned into makeshift homes. Struggling wives and their hard-working husbands try to make ends meet. The younger generation dreams of dollars, Rock'n'Roll and the American way of life. To celebrate or to drown their misery - they're never short of a good reason to booze. Devil's Island vividly depicts the everyday life of a wacky family, their neighbours and friends and shows how some of their dreams come true and others don't.
Drifting Clouds (Country: Finland, France, Germany; Year: 1996; Director: Aki Kaurismäki; Writer: Aki Kaurismäki; Stars: Kati Outinen, Kari Väänänen, Elina Salo, Sakari Kuosmanen, Markku Peltola, Matti Onnismaa, Shelley Fisher, Markus Allan, Pauli Granfelt, Kari Lindqvist, Pentti Mutikainen, Tommi Parkkonen, Taisto Wesslin, Tuire Liiti, Kaarina Väyrynen)
The ever-poker-faced Ilona loses her job as a restaurant hostess, as her tram driver husband, Lauri, also finds himself out of work. Together they must hit the streets of Helsinki, facing up to hardship and humiliation in their quest for survival, guided through the gloom by a ray of hope.
Tears of Stone (Country: Germany, Iceland; Year: 1995; Director: Hilmar Oddsson; Writer: Sveinbjörn I.
