Eye For Film >> Movies >> The Young Ones (1961) Blu-Ray Review
This is a sunny restoration from Studiocanal that allows the colours of the period to pop and really does justice to the look of the film created by director Sidney J Furie and cinematographer Douglas Slocombe. You only have to look at the original trailer, included in this release, to see how murky the film had got down the years. The mono soundtrack, meanwhile, is crisp.
There's no extra involving Cliff Richard himself, sadly, but what is included is well worth a look. That’s Showbusiness: Melvyn Hayes On The Young Ones is an enjoyable interview with the British star, which sees him recall working on the film. "I can't remember being paid but I probably was," he says, although he goes on to recall that he tried to get extra days of rehearsal since they earned him £5 a time. This is just one of many anecdotes that give a sense of the set at the time.
On The Set Of The Young Ones features narration from stuntman Rocky Taylor and runs at just under ten minutes. Taylor, who went on to have an extensive career spanning TV (The Champions, Randall And Hopkirk Deceased and many more) and film (everything from Raiders Of The Lost Ark to Spider-Man Far From Home), notes this was his accidental start in the business, courtesy of his stuntman dad.
A stills gallery is also included.
A bit more more beef in the extras department would be welcome, especially from an expert or two to set the film more in context. This is nonetheless a decent edition of a sweet-hearted charmer.
