Eye For Film >> Movies >> Supervixens (1975) Blu-Ray Review

Severin Films are releasing restored versions of Russ Meyer's Vixen trilogy in UHD, Blu-ray and DVD formats.
The wide open desert landscapes of the second film, SuperVixens, lend themselves well to 4K. Like the other films in this series the UHD version is making use of High Dynamic range but again Meyer's film does not derive much benefit from this. Most of the film is shot against the vistas of Arizona. Meyer makes the desert warm and soft. The natural earth tones and the even blue skies don't want to have exaggerated contrast.

The UHD version comes with an audio commentaries by Meyer. As with the other commentaries by Meyer it is fairly entertaining, varied, and provides a lot of information about the film. The disc also comes with an original trailer. There's over-the-top narration by Meyer for an over-the-top film.
The Blu-ray and DVD come with some added special features. There are a couple of old interviews with Meyer and Charles Napier who played Harry Sledge. Both of these are quite interesting. Also included is an episode of documentary series The Incredibly Strange Film Show. The Russ Meyer episode was shown in 1988 on Chanel 4 and presented by Jonathan Ross. It is a blast of nostalgia taking you back to a time when terrestrial TV in the UK showed a lot of less-than-mainstream films, a time of red triangles and Moviedrome.
