The picture and sound quality are good, and it has the usual scene selection, subtitles options etc. But there’s virtually nothing in the way of extras – a trailer and, er, that’s it. Given that this is based on a true story this seems to me a huge missed opportunity. Brian Norris’ notes on his experiences in East Germany on the film’s website are fascinating and hint at a much more complicated, interesting story than the one that eventually appeared. And some comments from director, cast etc about what drew them to a story that doesn’t automatically scream ‘box office gold’ could have been interesting.

Maybe there’s a ‘non-vanilla’ version in the pipeline. If so, my advice would be: more documentary material but, given the quality of what DID make the final cut, skip the deleted scenes.
