Fans of the movie will love the extras, while those left a little bewildered by the message about grief director Brad Silberling is trying to make will find answers.

There are 18 deleted scenes but most add nothing to the story. You can watch them with or without commentary from Silberling - with is much more interesting, obviously.

There is more of Holly Hunter, who is underused in the movie, while another early moment sees Bertie discussing the bar's financial problems with her co-worker, a plotline the finished movie doesn't go into in any detail.

The picture quality of the deleted scenes is terrible, though, and resembles some cheap pirate copy someone has obtained with a video camera smuggled into a cinema.

The Journey To Screen documentary is a 22-minute made-for-tv effort - you'd think they would have got some behind the scenes stuff for the DVD.

It includes chats with the cast and Silberling ? and focuses on the casting of the movie, revealing how Gyllenhaal was chosen because he reminded Silberling of himself as a young man.

Moonlight Mile is a personal movie for Silberling, being based on his own experience of losing a girlfriend and sharing his grief with her parents. His audio commentary over the movie is touching as he details his three-year struggle to get his script to the big screen.

He also explains certain aspects of the movie that might leave viewers scratching their heads. He never intended to show the conclusion of the trial, claiming it doesn't matter to the family - they have reached a stage where they can begin to move on and find new happiness regardless of what happens.

Silberling admits this is his own experience - he was blessed by a wife and child after suffering so much loss. It is his "journey" - a description he irritatingly uses every two minutes.

The cast's audio commentary reveals their affection for the script - they loved the story and were keen to be on board. It also reveals their approach to their parts and how the story affected them.

A lot of detail from cast and crew - a real "journey" into the Moonlight Mile world.
