This year, the category expanded from 12 to 16 international documentary films. In The Pit won the Grand Jury Prize, while De Nadie was voted the audience favourite. Special Jury Awards went to and Dear Pyongyang. This was the inaugural year of the Documentary Editing Award.

On August 15, 2005, Israel began to evacuate 8,000 Jewish settlers from the Gaza Strip. In a unilateral move by the Israeli government, they were removed from their homes to make way for 250,000 Palestinians.
