Read Paul Griffiths's film review of Sleeping Dogs

There's plenty to recommend on Tartan's DVD release of Sleeping Dogs. Director Bobcat Goldthwait and actress Melinda Page Hamilton (who plays the lead character of Amy in the film) are clearly having a blast as they answer questions in typically tongue-in-cheek fashion. They talk about the problems/joys of shooting a film on such a ridiculously tight budget and seem to be loving every minute of the movie's promotion.

Bobcat is similarly entertaining on the accompanying DVD commentary. There's never a dull moment as he exclaims "That dog is really hot", reveals the difficulties of shooting in a tight space, how they shot scenes on a porn stage, how they pinched props from anywhere and everywhere and generally jokes his way through the full runtime. He frequently claims to be "babbling" but, in fact, he's the perfect guide and mixes the right amount of humour and facts to make this well worth the listen.

The only slight downside is that the soundtrack to the film is almost completely muted under his voice-over making it hard to hear bits of the dialogue that he occasionally refers to. There are no subtitles for either the film or the commentary.

In terms of picture and sound, both fare as well as could be expected here but since this is a budget piece, you can't expect miracles.

All in all a decently packaged DVD with extras you could listen to more than once.
